NLP & Teamwork - NLP Conference November 2009

The following articles are about some of the topics which we explored during the NLP and Team working session on Saturday 15 November 2009:

None of us is as smart as all of us

Comfort, Stretch, Panic (1)

Challenge by Choice

At the conference session I mentioned our use of the High & Low Ropes Challenges on our New Forest NLP courses. There are sections relating to these and other outdoor activities here:

Why NLP in the countryside?

(1) The Pegasus NLP "4 Rs Model"

In a nutshell…

The 4 Rs of respect, recognition, reassurance, and responsibility are the essential elements in any relationship - including relationship within a team.

The Pegasus NLP 4 Rs have an important impact on the other person’s experience of communicating with us.

Why use this?

The 4 R’s are essential to truly effective communication. They operate at the Beliefs, Values, and Identity levels of the Logical Levels.

They provide a more effective approach to establishing Rapport that the usual techniques-led approach (which operate at the Capabilities & Skills level).

It is quite possible to have very effective communication without using Rapport techniques as long as we are using the 4 R’s. On the other hand, even though we may be using Rapport techniques it is unlikely we will create a more that superficial relationship unless we are consciously or unconsciously demonstrating the 4 R’s.

How to use the 4 Rs

Communicating with others

Respect

We each aim to ensure that each team member feels respected as a unique and valid individual. E.g. they get our full attention when this is appropriate and feasible.

Recognition

We each aim to recognise both the verbal and non-verbal communication of fellow team members and respond appropriately to this. E.g. we may give special attention to their non-verbal communication (posture, muscle tonus, voice patterns, skin colour, etc.) and recognise how this supports or contradicts what they say.

Reassurance

We each aim to ensure that every member of the team considers the team as an emotionally ‘safe’ place to be - in terms of their status and self esteem.  E.g. if we disagree with their actions we comment on their behaviour and their use of skills rather than on their personality or self esteem.

Responsibility

We each aim to act as if we are responsible for how others respond to us – and, if they are not responding as we wish them to, we continually vary our manner of communicating until they do – or until we realise that they are not going to.
